Big Brother / Big Sister update
During the month of July the Damascus Road Justice League will be focusing its efforts on a mentor recruiting drive for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County (BBBS). Please take a moment to look over the attached materials and familiarize yourself with the issues we have in our community as well as the great work that BBBS is doing on behalf of at risk children. They are making a difference.
By mentoring a child in the program you can significantly increase the child’s chances for success in many areas of their lives. Research and statistics show that the impacts of this success can be felt for generations and generations to come as cycles of poverty and behavior are broken. This is an amazing way to fight injustice right in our community.
The Justice League has been working with BBBS to identify kids currently on the waiting list for a mentor in the neighborhood surrounding Damascus Road. There are kids on the waiting list all over Dane County. However, you are coming to church each Sunday anyway so you will be in the neighborhood. The time commitment to meet with the child before or after church is very small compared to the impact it can have. Maybe you can even bring them to church with you so that they can learn all the ways that God loves and values them even though our society may not.
Please consider volunteering. Even if you only have a slight interest or curiosity; I invite you to contact me to talk about it and ask questions. I’ve been a big brother for nearly five years and I can’t possibly say all that I would like to in this letter. I would love the opportunity to share more with you.
